Thermo Fisher Scientific Showcases New Life Science Research Products
MUNICH — Thermo Fisher Scientific Inc., the world leader in serving science, today announced that it will feature a large array of new Thermo Scientific reagents used for protein expression, detection, preparation and purification at booth 101 in Hall B1 during Analytica 2010, being held March 23 – 26, in Munich, Germany.
The company recently introduced the Thermo Scientific Pierce In Vitro Glycoprotein kit, which is an innovative protein expression system based on human cell lysates that improves post-translational modification of proteins. The kit synthesizes and accurately glycosylates protein in vitro at higher efficiencies than current commercially available methods. The easy-to-use protein synthesis and glycosylation reaction takes only 90 minutes and does not require the addition of other components such as microsomal membranes. For reactions that do not require glycosylation, the Thermo Scientific Pierce In Vitro Protein Expression Kit is available. Each 90 minute reaction produces higher protein yields than other commonly used methods.
A new line of products for accelerating Western blotting detection will also be showcased. Four reagent kits based on the popular Thermo Scientific SuperSignal and ECL Chemiluminscent Substrates allow for Western blot detection in 55 – 60 minutes, a reduction from the standard four hours typically required. Each kit provides all of the necessary reagents to complete a Western blot that was probed with a mouse or rabbit primary antibody yielding results comparable to classical methods. Detection levels from picogram to low-to-mid fentogram range of antigen are achievable depending on the substrate.
In addition to the Western blot reagent kits, the Thermo Scientific Pierce Fast Semi-Dry Blotter enables the rapid transfer of proteins or nucleic acids from a gel to PVDF or nitrocellulose membranes. When used with the new Thermo Scientific Pierce Fast Semi-Dry Transfer Buffer, efficient protein transfer occurs within 7-10 minutes, a major improvement over the 45 minutes associated with traditional Western transfer methods.
Another new offering is a range of protein purification and preparation products that includes the next generation of the popular Thermo Scientific Slide-A-Lyzer Dialysis product line. The newly designed and patented Slide-A-Lyzer® G2 Dialysis Cassettes offer sample loading and removal with a pipette or hypodermic needle. The new cassettes have built-in air chambers for buoyancy and vertical orientation, eliminating the need for separate floats. The Slide-A-Lyzer G2 line offers units with sample capacities of 100 microliters to 70 milliliters.
In addition, the Thermo Scientific Pierce Detergent Removal Spin Columns efficiently remove high concentrations of detergents and surfactants commonly used in protein extractions with minimal sample loss. The pre-packed spin columns accommodate samples volumes of 0.01 to 1 milliliter, and are an attractive alternative to dialysis or a size-exclusion chromatography method.
For sample preparation in mass spectrometry, the Thermo Scientific Pierce C18 Tips enable fast and efficient capture, concentration, desalting and elution of peptides. The procedure is simple and requires less than 5 minutes to process protein digests, strong cation exchange fractions and peptide samples. The Pierce C18 Tips are available in two resin-bed volumes of 10 and 100 microliters, offering maximum flexibility.
Thermo Scientific Pierce Concentrators provide convenient protein concentration, desalting and buffer exchange. Their unique design greatly improves the concentration factor achieved in a single centrifugation step and minimizes polarization and adsorption at the membrane surface. The Pierce Concentrators result in concentration factors of greater than 110-fold in less than 45 minutes.
