Carl Zeiss Designates Varian Vacuum Technologies as a Supply Chain Partner

OBERKOCHEN/Germany – May 11, 2009.

Carl Zeiss SMT, the world’s leading manufacturer of optical systems for chip fabrication has designated Varian Vacuum Technologies as a Carl Zeiss SMT Supply Chain Partner. Headquartered in Leinì-Torini, Italy, Varian Vacuum Technologies develops specific vacuum solutions for the electron microscopes of Carl Zeiss.

For almost 20 years, the company has been one of the close partners of the Nano Technology Systems Division at Carl Zeiss SMT and supports the enhancement of electron microscopes with its outstanding skills and special solutions for the entire vacuum system of an electron microscope. Sergio Piras, Senior Vice President of Varian Inc. and Managing Director of Varian Vacuum Technologies, emphasizes how important this close cooperation is: “Varian has always recognized the importance of working with an industry leader such as Carl Zeiss. The many challenges posed by the continuous search for new and innovative solutions to very difficult problems resulted in a stimulus for us to continuously improve our own capabilities.”

Dr. Dirk Stenkamp, Member of the Board at Carl Zeiss SMT and Managing Director of the Nano Technology Systems Division, underscores the importance of the partnership: “The vacuum solutions developed specially for us are vital to electron microscopes as they ensure that there are few disruptions on the microscope. Designating Varian as a Supply Chain Partner demonstrates our recognition of the outstanding cooperation over the past 20 years.”

Peter Schlindwein, Director of Supply Chain Management at Carl Zeiss SMT, also stresses the long collaboration: “The close partnership benefits both sides. While we profit from the technological enhancements of our suppliers, the status of “Carl Zeiss Supply Chain Partner” is a designation that our suppliers can use to gain new customers.”

Varian Vacuum Technologies is the 7th supplier to achieve the rank of Supply Chain Partner. In this way, the company is preparing for the future requirements of the market jointly with its partners and strengthening the trust placed by end customers in its products and technologies.
