MELBOURNE, Fla.–Smiths Detection Product Inspection (PI) division has selected DTx Inc., the authority on highly reliable embedded computing systems, as a single source provider for both its computer and custom display needs for the Eagle X-Ray System.

The cost for us to go out to a customer site and swap-out a piece of equipment was high, both in dollars and in customer perception,” said John Greiner, PI’s General Manager. “Our brand image was at risk due to reliability issues.”

The Smiths Detection line of X-ray inspection systems evaluates packaged products for contaminants such as metal, glass, stone and bone. Their previous third party systems integrator kept changing internal components without warning, often preventing Smiths Detection from discovering software compatibility issues until units were on the production floor or installed in the field. Failure rates and lead times hit an all-time high, and PI’s Research and Development team was putting out fires instead of designing new enhancements.

Smiths Detection needed a new design and a more reliable service provider. R&D Manager Alan Henley, who had worked with DTx while at Siemens Medical, recommended DTx for its innovative solutions, engineering acumen and customer support. Based on DTx’s product design, quality and life cycle control, the companies partnered; and DTx is now manufacturing the Eagle X-ray System’s critical components.

As a result of this outsourcing partnership, lead time has been halved and real-time tracking prevents unexpected production delays and streamlines the entire process. PI’s quality and customer satisfaction have dramatically improved, and R&D can now focus on creating next-generation products.
