This month, the European Commission (EC) outlined a funding plan for research partnerships as part of the Horizon 2020 program. Pending approval by the Council of the EU and the European Parliament, funding contributed by Horizon 2020, industry and member states will total €22,579 million ($29,709 million) over seven years. The plan includes joint funding of €17,515 million for five new public-private partnerships, known as Joint Technology Initiatives (JTIs). The JTIs include the Innovative Medicines Initiative 2, which will receive €1,725 million each from Horizon 2020 and industry to develop vaccines and new drugs; Fuel Cells and Hydrogen 2, which will receive €700 million each from Horizon 2020 and industry to increase the use of clean, efficient fuel cell and hydrogen technologies; and Bio-based Industries, which will support renewable natural resources for manufacturing with €1,000 million from Horizon 2020 and €2,800 million from industry. The EC announced €3,464 million in total funding for four partnerships with EU member states, including the European Metrology Research Programme, which will receive €300 million each from Horizon 2020 and member states, and Eurostars 2, which will support innovative small and medium enterprises with €287 million from Horizon 2020 and €861 million from member states.
