Taiwan
Biotechnology in Taiwan is booming, with the number of companies growing by 188.6% to 83 and capitalization increasing by 360.0% to $21.13 billion from 2009 to 2103. Over the last 15 years, the government has contributed $100–$200 million annually to biotech, facilitating the shift from clinical trials of foreign-developed drugs to drug discovery within Taiwan. Regulatory changes, such as the 1999 loosening of restrictions on profitability for companies planning to go public, have allowed firms to raise substantially higher funds. As of 2007, biotech companies benefit from tax breaks for research and training, and researchers from public institutions can collaborate with private companies. Companies are also beginning to collaborate with Chinese firms. As a whole, biotech companies in Taiwan raised $1 billion in the last year, and the government plans to increase its funding for biotech over the next three years by 25%.
