Hitachi High-Technologies’ fiscal second quarter 2014 Science and Medical Systems (SMS) sales grew 7.5% to ¥37.1 billion ($375.2 million = ¥98.89= $1) due to the acquisition of SII NanoTechnology (see IBO 12/15/12) and currency. Sales of Electron Microscopes and Other Scientific Instruments climbed 8.3% and 47.7% to account for 21% and 18% of SMS sales, respectively. Sales of Biotechnology and Other products grew 1.8% to represent 9%. Medical product sales declined 3.0% to make up 53%. Fiscal 2014 SMS revenue outlook was raised 3% to ¥140.8 billion ($1.4 billion) for growth of 6%. Full-year SMS operating profit outlook was increased 24.5% to ¥94.3 billion ($962 million) for flat growth.

AMETEK named James O. Davis vice president and general manager of its Process & Analytical Instruments Division in October. He was most recently senior vice president and general manager of Teledyne Technologies’ Instruments Group.

Harvard Bioscience appointed Yong Sun vice president of Strategic Marketing and Business Development, a newly created position, in October. He previously served as vice president of Global Marketing and Americas Sales at Beaver-Visitec International.

In November, Harvard Bioscience CEO Jeffrey A. Duchemin was appointed to the additional positions of president and director. He replaces former president David Green, who was named president of the Harvard Apparatus Regenerative Technology spin-off.

Xylem’s third quarter Test sales were flat. The company announced on its conference call that it appointed Chris McIntire, senior vice president and president, Analytics, to the additional position of heading the company’s Treatment franchise.

In October, GE Healthcare Life Sciences opened a 1,000-square-foot technology lab at the UK’s Stevenage Bioscience Catalyst bioscience campus.

Modern Water signed an exclusive distribution agreement with Beijing Green Science and Technology for mainland China, Hong Kong and Macau.

Becton Dickinson announced on its fiscal fourth quarter conference call that Claude Dartiguelongue was named president of BD Biosciences, replacing Alberto Mas, who was named president, Diagnostic Systems. Mr. Dartiguelongue previously served as president of Pharmaceutical Systems.

Mettler-Toledo third quarter laboratory-related product sales increased 3% to make up 46% of revenues, or $272.2 million, as growth in Europe and the Americas was partially offset by reduced sales volume in Asia Pacific, particularly China. Sales of lab balances and process analytics showed strong growth due to higher volume and favorable price realization.

In November, Shimadzu established a wholly owned Latin American subsidiary in the Oriental Republic of Uruguay. The head office in Montevideo is staffed with 10 people. Fiscal 2014 sales of $70 million are forecast.
