Earlier this month, the Safe Food for Canadians Act became law. The move streamlines provisions of the country’s Food and Drugs Act, Fish Inspection Act, Meat Inspection Act, Canada Agricultural Products Act, and Consumer Packaging and Labeling Act into one law to reduce health risks and improve industry compliance. The Food and Drugs Act will remain in effect, applying to food products sold only within a particular province. The Safe Food for Canadians Act sets more consistent inspection protocols for imports and exports, granting the Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) the authority to require importers to be registered or licensed and to certify all food exports. Also under the Act, the CFIA has the power to set and enforce regulations for tracking and recalling food products, including the ability to ban the sale of previously recalled products. The Act establishes harsher penalties for unsafe food practices.
