According to a report by EuroStemCell, the Kyoto University Institute for Integrated Cell-Material Sciences and Elsevier based on an analysis of publications in the Scopus database, stem cell research is growing rapidly. Stem cell research publications totaled 21,193 in 2012 to make up 1% of global scientific publications. Between 2008 and 2012, the number of stem cell research publications increased at a compound annual growth rate of 7.0%. During the period, iPS cell publications grew 77.0% to 1,061 papers. Based on a field-weighted citation impact (FWCI) with an indexed value of 1.00 for all subject areas, the FWCI for stem cell research publications was 1.5% and has remained relatively stable from 2008 to 2012. Publications were also analyzed in regards to 21 countries. The US, followed by China, had the highest volume of stem cell research publication during the five-year period. Countries showing an increase in their proportion of stem cell research publications over the period included Singapore (1.8% of world output in 2012), Italy (1.64%) and the US (1.61%). Academic-corporate collaborations accounted for 2% of stem cell research publication during the period.
