Sweden’s Research and Innovation Bill will provide SEK 11.5 billion ($1.7 billion) in additional funds from 2013 to 2016, expanding funding from SEK 1.7 billion in 2013 to SEK 4.0 billion in 2016. Universities, the life sciences, research for new products and services, and research facilities will receive SEK 4.3 billion, SEK 2.1 billion, SEK 2.1 billion and SEK 955.0 million over the period, respectively. In 2016, the government will invest SEK 600 million in the life sciences, consisting of SEK 200 million for SciLifeLab; SEK 100 million for research on health and aging; SEK 75 million each for research for infections and antibiotics, and clinical treatment research; and SEK 50 million each for coordination of clinical studies, drug development and “register-based research.” Research for new products and services will receive SEK 780 million in 2016, including SEK 300 million and SEK 225 million for research for industry and society, and the “strategic innovation areas” program,” respectively.
