To replace Moore’s law, next month, the semiconductor industry will launch the International Roadmap for Devices and Systems, ending the International Technology Roadmap for Semiconductors. The strategy will focus on applications and the chips needed for them. The Semiconductor Industry Association will follow its own strategy. Under Moore’s law, as circuits got smaller, they began to produce too much heat and became more and more expensive to make. Despite redesigned circuits and stable microprocessor speeds, silicon circuit size limits will be reached in 2020. Quantum computing and new material R&D have been slow to develop, and 3-D configurations are hard to apply to microprocessors. The demands of mobile devices have made server farms and specialized applications a priority for chip developers, which must now make different types of specialized products that can work together. Priorities include energy efficiency, connectivity, security and cost.
