As part of its 2014–17 medium-term management plan, Takara Bio announced fiscal 2017 sales targets for its Research Reagents business of ¥18,708 million ($184 million) and ¥2,681 million ($26 million) for its Scientific Instruments business to make up 74% and 11% of Bioindustry segment sales, respectively.

GTCR completed its acquisition of Cole-Parmer (see IBO 7/31/14) in August and named Bernd Brust as CEO. He was previously Chief Commercial Operations Officer at Life Technologies.

Promega expanded into India in August, opening its 16th regional subsidiary in New Delhi.

GE Healthcare Life Sciences will open a $21 million, 160,000 ft2 facility in Marlborough, Massachusetts, in spring 2015. The facility will serve as its new US headquarters and house more than 500 employees, consolidating the business’s East Coast presence.

In October, GE Healthcare named John Flannery as president and CEO. He was most recently senior vice president of Business Development for GE.

In August, Metrohm established a direct operation in Turkey in August through the takeover of its distributor, Dr. Kimyager I. Yanco.

Oxford Instruments appointed Professor Sir Richard Friend to its Board in September. He is a fellow of the Royal Society and a fellow of the Royal Academy of Engineering, and Cavendish Professor of Physics and fellow of St. John’s College at the University of Cambridge.

In September, American Laboratory Trading opened sales offices in San Diego, California, and Research Triangle, North Carolina, bringing its number of regional offices to four.

AMETEK named Gretchen W. McClain to its Board in September. Most recently, she was CEO of Xylem.

BGI, Imperial College London and Waters signed a framework agreement in September for a translational-medicine collaboration, including R&D integrated with clinical applications from genomic and metabolomics to develop a comprehensive standard and approach for human-omics testing and data analysis.

PerkinElmer announced in September the departure of Daniel R. Marshak, PhD, senior vice president and CSO.

Agilent Technologies recognized Carlos Cordon-Cardo, MD, PhD, the Irene Heinz Given and John LaPorte Given Professor and chair of Pathology at Mount Sinai Health System, with an Agilent Thought Leader Award in recognition of his work in molecular and translational pathology. The award will support his ongoing cancer research.

In October, Illumina selected three startup companies for the inaugural Illumina Accelerator funding cycle: biopharmaceutical company Encode Genomics; agricultural-technology company EpiBiome; and Xcell Biosciences, a research-tools and diagnostics company focused on commercializing cell-culture solutions.
