For the third straight year, Canada’s gross domestic expenditure on R&D (GERD) in 2015 is expected to decline, falling 0.7% to CAD 31.6 billion ($23.8 billion). This drop is predicted for spending in all performing sectors except higher education and the federal government, which are anticipated to experience 1.0% and 4.0% increases to CAD 13.0 billion and CAD 2.7 billion, respectively. Their R&D funding is predicted to rise 1.0% and 1.8% to CAD 6.4 billion and CAD 6.2 billion, respectively. R&D expenditures by the business enterprise sector are projected to fall 2.6% to CAD 15.5 billion. Business enterprise’s R&D funding is expected to fall as well, declining 2.8% to CAD 14.0 billion. In the natural sciences and engineering, R&D spending is anticipated to drop 0.8% to CAD 28.3 billion. The decrease stems from the fall in spending by the business enterprise sector.
