R&D expenditures in Hungary rose 8.5% last year to HUF 336,557 million ($1,607 million), or 1.2% of GDP. Scientific research accounted for 55% of R&D expenditures, of which basic and applied research represented 21% and 34%, respectively. Experimental development accounted for 45% of R&D spending. R&D institutes, higher education and business enterprises made up 16%, 20% and 62% of R&D spending. By R&D funding source, business accounted for 48%, compared to 39% for government and 12% from outside the country, with nonprofits accounting for the remainder. R&D spending for the natural sciences, medical sciences and agricultural sciences grew 0.2%, 8.6% and 7.2%, to HUF 75.7 billion, HUF 25.0 billion and HUF 22.0 billion, respectively. The number of R&D staff rose 2.6% to 55,386. The number of full-time equivalent research staff rose 7.9% to 33,960, of which 23,019 were researchers, a 7.9% increase.
