BGI and Thailand Partners to Improve National Precision-Medicine Platform in Thailand
On August 24, 2018, the 6th meeting of the China-Thailand Joint Commission on trade investment, and economic cooperation took place in Bangkok, Thailand. During the conference, BGI’s cooperation with the Chulabhorn Royal Academy and Eastern Economic Corridor (EEC) office of Thailand was officially announced. Dr. Somkid Jatusripitak, Deputy Prime Minister of Thailand; Dr. Uttama Savanayana, Minister of Industry and Mr. Kanit Sangsubhan, Secretary-General of the EEC of Thailand witnessed the ceremony.
The tripartite will work together to establish precision-medicine national platform in Thailand’s eastern economic corridor to promote the development of biotechnology in Thailand and drive Thailand to become a medical center in Southeast Asia, to support Thailand 4.0 life sciences transformation, and to drive growth in the CLMVT (Cambodia, Laos, Myanmar, Vietnam and Thailand) region.
The cooperation with the Chulabhorn Royal Academy and the EEC office in Thailand is an important step in the substantial cooperation between BGI and Thailand in precision medicine after the visit of the Deputy Prime Minister of Thailand Mr. Somkid Jatusripitak to China National GeneBank in June 2018. This cooperation is a part of Thailand’s Precision Medicine Alliance, BGI together with the Thai Ministry of Science, Ministry of Health and Ministry of Education complements overall cooperation.
At present, some projects of the Thai Precision Medicine Alliance led by the Ministry of Science and Technology, Ministry of Health and the Ministry of Education have started partial sequencing process using the BGI’s sequencing platform.
About the Eastern Economic Corridor
The Eastern Economic Corridor (EEC) is a large-scale development project under the scheme of Thailand 4.0 aiming to revitalize and enhancing of the well-known Eastern Seaboard Development Program that had supported Thailand as a powerhouse for industrial production in Thailand. Eastern Economic Corridor aims to upgrade infrastructure, develop new industries and incentivize/facilitate investment. The EEC is designed to attract new industries while also upgrading existing clusters such as automotive, electronics, and petrochemicals. Additionally, five major infrastructural pro¬jects are planned to make the corridor more attractive for investments and to improve the connectivity with the ASEAN hinterland.

Chulabhorn Royal Academy (CRA) is officially accredited and/or recognized by the Ministry of Education, Thailand. Chulabhorn Royal Academy offers courses and programs leading to officially recognized higher education degrees such as master degrees, doctorate degrees in biochemistry, biotechnology, medicinal chemistry, chemical carcinogenesis, environmental toxicology, immunology, natural products, organic synthesis, and pharmacology.
