In its annual rankings of the world’s top universities, Shanghai Jiao Tong University has listed 17 US universities among the top 20 and 55 US universities among the top 100. Britain and Germany had the second greatest number of universities in the top 100 rankings with 10 and six, respectively. Japan, Canada and Sweden each had four universities within the top 100, while Australia, France and Switzerland each had three. The rankings are based only on research production and not on teaching. The top five universities are Harvard, Stanford, the University of California at Berkeley, Cambridge University and MIT. Other counties in the top 100 are Denmark, the Netherlands, Finland, Israel, Norway and Russia. The number of Chinese universities in the top 500 increased to 30 from 25 one year ago.
