Africa

Over the last 10-plus years, science in Africa has experienced a revival, with organizations in the international scientific community showing interest in the continent’s research output. Last month, the Howard Hughes Medical Institute (HHMI) partnered with Wellcome Trust to establish the interdisciplinary Africa Health Research Institute, based in South Africa. By integrating data from the Africa Centre for Population Health with basic and experimental science at the KwaZulu-Natal Research agency, the Institute aims to combat tuberculosis, HIV and related diseases. Both HHMI and Wellcome Trust have been involved in the international scientific community for some time. In 2015, HHMI invested $11 million into international science. Also in 2015, Wellcome Trust formed the Alliance for Accelerating Excellence in Science in Africa (AESA) with the UK Department of International Development and the Gates Foundation. AESA is dedicated to giving African scientists the autonomy to decide how international funding is invested.
