Agilent Adds Lab Automation to Bolster Life Science Business

The purchase continues Agilent’s broadening of its life science offerings and will enable automation of its microarrays, as well as the integration of multiple product lines on an automated platform. According to the Silicon Valley/San Jose Business Journal, Velocity11’s revenues grew 117% from 2003 to reach $21.4 million in 2005. Velocity11’s product lines include the BioCel Automation System and Bravo Liquid Handling Platform.

Santa Clara, CA 11/7/07—Agilent Technologies has definitively agreed to purchase Velocity11, a provider of liquid handling and laboratory robotics for the life science market. Financial terms were not disclosed. “Velocity11 is a market leader in lab automation with a solid reputation for innovative technology, quality products and superb customer service,” commented Nick Roelofs, vice president of Agilent’s Life Science Systems and Solutions Unit. “Together, we can offer customers a comprehensive set of workflow solutions with increased levels of automation, which can help speed drug discovery and genetic research.” Agilent is offering jobs to Velocity11’s 150 employees. The acquisition is expected to close in 30–60 days.
