Brazil’s Ministry of Science and Technology will fund seven nanotechnology institutes as part of the PACTI project. For nanotech, PACTI calls for the development of a long-term strategic plan and innovative support mechanisms, as well as increased research infrastructure and personnel. Under PACTI, nanotech will receive €23 million ($29.5 million) over four years. Milestones in Brazil’s nanotech programs include the 2007–2010 scheduled construction of 10 regional reference labs, support of 20 public-private research projects annually and 15 basic research projects per year. There are an estimated 30–40 Brazilian nanotechnology companies.
