Brazil’s São Paulo Research Foundation (FAPESP) will invest $680 million in 17 Research, Innovation and Dissemination Centers over 11 years. The FAPESP previously funded 11 centers. The FAPESP will provide 54% of the funds, which come from the 1% of São Paulo state’s tax revenues it receives, and 45% will come from six state universities with which it works. The remaining funds will come from industry and government groups. The 17 centers are headquartered at universities in São Paulo state and include the Food Research Center, the Center for Research on Inflammatory Diseases, the Center for Research and Innovation in Biodiversity and Drug Discovery, the Center for Research on Toxins, Immune Response and Cell Signaling, and the Center for Research in Cell Therapy. FAPESP’s funding program totaled $525 million in 2012. The amount is in addition to the government’s scientific research spending, which raised such spending 32.8% to BRL 8.5 million ($4.3 million) in 2012.
