Hach named VWR a local distributor for its laboratory products in Australia and New Zealand.

Technology trading group Addtech Life Science acquired BioNordika in January. BioNordika markets reagents and instruments for biomedical research and has annual sales of around SEK 80 million ($12 million).

In 2011, Danaher’s Environmental sales rose 7.4% to $2,939.6 million (see IBO 1/31/12), including 1.5% growth from acquisitions and 2.0% growth due to currency effects. Sales from the unit’s existing businesses grew 4.0%, including 1.5% growth due to price increases. Sales from existing water quality businesses grew in the high single digits. For this unit, Chinese municipal market demand increased but the rate of revenue growth declined. Sales for Danaher Life Sciences & Diagnostics rose 101.3% to $4,627.4 million, with acquisitions contributing 91.0% growth and currency adding 3.5% growth. Sales for existing businesses grew 7.0%, including a 0.5% gain from price increases. Revenue from the existing microscopy businesses grew in the mid-single digits. MS sales grew in the low double digits, with an over 500-basis-point improvement in operating margin. Life Sciences & Diagnostics posted $100.9 million in restructuring and other related charges. For the company as a whole, sales of “analytical and physical instrumentation” rose 13.7% to $ 5,920.9 million.

In February, PerkinElmer named Peter Barrett, a partner at Atlas Ventures, to its Board.

Roche Diagnostics appointed Dan Zabrowski as head of Applied Science, effective February 1. He recently served as global head of Roche Partnering.

Roche Applied Science’s 2011 sales fell 14.7% to CHF 740 million ($831 million) to make up 8% of Roche Diagnostics sales. Custom Biotech and Biochemicals sales, which accounted for 43% of Applied Science revenues, rose 5%. Genomics and PCR analysis sales fell 15% and 2%, respectively, due to a decline in instrument sales. Applied Science sales in Europe, the Middle East and Africa; North America; and Rest of World fell 4%, 3% and 2% to account for 40%, 37% and 23% of Applied Science revenues, respectively. Roche Diagnostics recorded a CHF 54 million ($61 million) impairment for intangibles in the sequencing and array businesses.

Mandel Scientific acquired Canadian distributor InterSciences in February.

In February, Life Technologies named Ronnie Andrews president of Medical Sciences. He is the former CEO of Clarient.

Mettler-Toledo’s 2011 Lab sales increased 9% in local currencies, 14% in US dollars, to $1,039.2 million or 45% of company sales.

In February, LECO opened a 28,000-square-foot facility, the Elizabeth S. Warren Technical Center, in St. Joseph, Michigan, for R&D of separation science products.
