Merck Millipore updated its 2010 nonGAAP guidance for Millipore as a stand-alone company, estimating that revenue will increase 8.8% to $1,800 million and operating income will grow 18.8% to $405 million.

In June, the University of California San Diego, the Salk Institute for Biological Studies and Life Technologies initiated stem cell research on transplant therapies for Lou Gehrig’s disease. The Primary and Stem Cell business of Invitrogen, part of Life Technologies, will provide support for testing preclinical concepts.

Metrohm appointed M.T. Brandão as its new partner for Portugal, excluding voltammetry and Applikon Analytical products.

In July, Dynasil Corporation of America acquired Hilger Crystals, a suppler of synthetic crystals for IR spectroscopy, X-ray and gamma ray detection, from Newport for $4 million and contingent payments.

Agilent Technologies named Didier Hirsch senior vice president and CFO in July.

In August, Agilent signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the Government of Malaysia through the Malaysian Institute of Pharmaceuticals and Nutraceuticals (IPHARM) to promote and develop cooperation in biotech. The strategic alliance will focus on the establishment of the IPHARM–Agilent Global Reference Research Lab and the development of human capital in biotech.

Roche Diagnostics reported that first-half sales for the Applied Science segment increased 11.4% (14% in local currencies) to CHF 449 million ($243 million) to represent 9% of sales. Custom biotech sales increased more than 25%, and sales of products for quantitative PCR and nucleic acid purification rose more than 13%. Microarray sales grew 26%, including growth of more than 63% for reagents. In local currency, North American and Rest of World sales rose 4% and 26% to account for 37% and 22% of sales, respectively, with Chinese revenue up 87%. Sales to Europe, the Middle East and Africa increased 18%.

Restek, a provider of GC and HPLC products, named CFO Bryan Wolcott head coach and president in July.

BD (Becton, Dickinson and Company) elected Christopher Jones to its Board in July. He is the former CEO of advertising agency JWT Worldwide.

In July, BD promoted President Vincent A. Forlenza to COO, in addition to his current title. In January, he assumed responsibility for the Integrated Supply Chain and Information Technology functions.

Fiscal first-quarter revenue for Hitachi High-Technologies Science & Medical Systems grew 13.6% to ¥27,500 million ($301 million). General Purpose Analytical Instruments, Electron Microscopes, Clinical Analyzers, and Biotechnology Products and Other represented 10%, 13%, 59% and 18% of revenue, respectively. The fiscal-year sales forecast was lowered to ¥114,500 million ($1,252 million).

Bruker named Charles F. Wagner Jr. to its Board in August. He was CFO at Millipore.
