Halma acquired in January Hong Kong’s Thinketron Precision Equipment, its Chinese subsidiary Baoding Longer Precision Pump and US subsidiary Langer Instruments for £23.7 million ($37.6 million) and deferred consideration. Longer Pump manufacturers and markets peristaltic, syringe and gear pumps used in lab, medical and industrial applications.
Halma announced that its Health & Analysis sector will now be reported under two new sectors: Medical, consisting of the former Health Optics subsector, and Environmental & Analysis, consisting of the former Photonics and Water subsectors. The former Fluid Technology subsector will be divided between the two new sectors based on end-markets. For fiscal 2012, Environmental & Analysis revenue rose 23.0% to £31.6 million ($50.2 million).
Fourth-quarter 2012 sales for Harvard Bioscience declined 2.7%, down 4.5% organically, to $28.2 million (see IBO 3/31/13). The acquisition of AHN Biotechnologie (see IBO 4/30/12) and currency contributed 1.6% and 0.2% to revenue growth, respectively. In 2012, revenues grew 2.1%, 0.1% organically, to $111.2 million, with the acquisition adding 3.1% to growth and currency reducing it by 1.1%. Direct sales accounted for 57% of revenues. Self-manufactured products represented 67% of revenues. Foreign operations accounted for 41% of sales.
In February, the Metrohm Foundation endowed a professorship in materials science at Zurich University of Applied Science with CHF 1.8 million ($2.0 million).
Agilent announced a collaboration with Florida International University’s International Forensics Research Institute to develop and validate new methods for rapid forensic screening and analysis based on triple quadrupole LC/MS, Q-TOF LC/MS, GC/MS and GC/MS/MS.
In February, Bruker announced the openings of its Mumbai and Bengaluru Centers of Excellence in India. Bruker expects Indian revenue to reach $50 million this year. It employs 100 people in the country.
The University of Texas at Arlington announced a $7.5 million gift from Shimadzu Scientific Instruments and that it will rename the Institute for Research Technologies to honor Shimadzu. The Institute includes the Shimadzu Center for Advanced Analytical Chemistry (see IBO 6/15/12) and the new Center for Imaging and Center for Environmental, Forensic and Material Analysis.
In March, AMETEK appointed Ron Oscher and Tom Marecic as senior vice presidents and general managers of the Electronic Instruments Group. Mr. Marecic was formerly general manager of the Process & Analytical Instruments Division. Mr. Oscher was formerly vice president and general manager of the Materials Analysis Division.
In March, Waters announced the opening of a new Solution Center in Singapore to serve Southeast Asia. The Center includes the Waters R&D facility for Engineering.
BioSpectrum Asia reported that in February Sigma-Aldrich opened a 45,000-square-foot Global Shared Services Center in Bangalore, India.
