Sartorius first quarter sales grew 17.0%, 14% organically, to €301.9 million ($331.8 million) (see IBO 4/30/16). Lab Products & Services (LPS) revenue rose 5.2% organically to account for 25% of revenues, led by strong demand for lab filters. Organic LPS sales in EMEA, Asia Pacific and the Americas grew 0.3%, 8.7% and 14.0% to make up 51%, 28% and 21%, respectively. The LPS constant currency sales growth outlook for 2016 was unchanged at 3%–7%.

Full-year 2015 Harvard Bioscience sales were flat at $108.7 million (see IBO 4/30/16). Contributions from acquisitions were mostly offset by currency headwinds of 3.7% and GE Healthcare’s discontinued sale of its spectrophotometer products (see IBO 10/31/15). Adjusted operating margin slumped nearly seven percentage points to 3.5% due to increased investments. The company projected 2016 sales to grow 2% to $109–$111 million.

Xylem reported flat Test revenue for the first quarter.

Fiscal second quarter revenue for Becton, Dickinson’s BD Biosciences unit declined 4.1%, 0.5% excluding currency, to $277 million to make up 9% of company sales. This decline was attributed to lower sales in Europe, which fell 7% due to clinical tender delays in Africa as well as a strong instrument sales comparison in Western Europe in the previous year. Conversely, US sales grew in the strong double digits, led by demand for high-parameter research flow cytometers and reagent sales.

In May, Oxford Instruments named Alan Thomson to its Board and as chairman, as of June 1. He is currently director of Bodycote and Hays.

AMETEK named Michael J. Pizzo as corporate vice president, Planning and Analysis. Most recently, he served as division vice president, Finance, for AMETEK Engineered Materials, Interconnects and Packaging.

AMETEK appointed Brian A. Hoffmann as vice president and general manager of the Maintenance, Repair and Overhaul Division.

For the half year ending March 31, within Diploma Life Sciences, sales for the a-1 businesses grew 3% in UK sterling, as envirosciences business grew 18% in Euro. CBISS business sales fell 8% in UK sterling.

Lisa Davis resigned from Spectris’ Board on May 20.

Bruker named Dr. Cynthia Friends, director of the Rowland Institute at Harvard University, to its Board in May.

PerkinElmer opened a Taipei Customer Knowledge Center in Taipei City, Taiwan. The Center is a relocation and expansion of the company’s Taiwan presence.

In May, canindia.com reported that the Delhi High Court has ordered Thermo Fisher Scientfic to stop using the Life Technologies trademark as part of a suit brought by Life Technologies India Pvt.

In June, Illumina named Paula Dowdy as senior vice president and general manager, Commercial Operations for Europe, the Middle East and Africa, effective August 1. She previously served as senior vice president for Cloud, Software, and Managed Services at Cisco.
