Bruker Acquires Imaging Business

With this acquisition, Bruker adds CT technology to its product line for preclinical animal imaging, which includes microMRI and magnetic resonance spectroscopy systems. This acquisition is the latest consolidation activity in this market, which include SonoSite’s purchase of VisualSonics (see IBO 5/31/10) and PerkinElmer’s acquisition of VisEn (see IBO 8/15/10).

Antwerp, Belgium 4/2/12—Bruker has acquired SkyScan, a manufacturer and distributor of micro-computed tomography (CT) systems for three-dimensional X-ray imaging, for an undisclosed amount. “We are impressed by the portfolio of high-performance SkyScan products which fit nicely into our global materials research and preclinical imaging distribution channels, and which complement our other X-ray analysis and preclinical MRI products,” said Bruker President and CEO Frank Laukien, PhD. Skyscan is expected to add $13 million to Bruker’s 2012 revenues and to be accretive to EPS by about $0.01. SkyScan’s sales are evenly divided between materials science and preclinical imaging applications. The company will be renamed Bruker microCT and will maintain its operations in Belgium with the same management. Bruker stated that it plans to keep most of the company’s distributors and to invest in additional demonstration centers.
