Bruker Investigates Corruption Allegations

The allegations relate to violations of the US Foreign Corrupt Practices Act, which outlaws the bribery of foreign government officials in order to win business. Bio-Rad disclosed a similar internal investigation last year (see IBO 5/15/10). Bio-Rad’s investigation is ongoing.

Washington, DC 8/2/11—In a filing with the SEC, Bruker has disclosed that it is investigating anonymous allegations of improper conduct at the Chinese operations of its Bruker Optics subsidiary. The Audit Committee of Bruker’s Board has begun an investigation, assisted with outside counsel and a forensic consulting firm. Bruker stated in the filing: “To date, the investigation has found evidence indicating that payments were made that improperly benefit employees or agents of government-owned enterprises in China.” Bruker is contacting the SEC and US Department of Justice to advise them of the company’s investigation. In 2010, Bruker Optics’ Chinese operations represented less than 2.5% of the firm’s sales.
