Bruker Takes Majority Share in Chemistry Software Firm

Billerica, MA 12/13/18—Bruker, a scientific instruments and high-value analytical and diagnostic solutions company, has acquired a majority stake in Spanish firm Mestrelab Research and announced a strategic partnership with the company. Financial details were not disclosed. Mestrelab’s software extracts and manages spectroscopic data from instrumentation such as NMR and MS systems for applications in medicinal chemistry, organic molecule structure elucidation and in industry. Mestrelab has 40 employees and more than 3,000 customers. “This new strategic collaboration and investment aligns the natural synergies between our two companies to deliver more comprehensive capabilities and future novel workflow solutions to our customers,” said Bruker BioSpin President Dr. Falko Busse. “Integrating the well-established software of Mestrelab with Bruker’s existing NMR systems and solutions allows us to further develop end-to-end solutions for customers in pharmaceutical, industrial and applied market segments, as well as in our core academic markets.” Mestrelab’s management will remain in place, and the company will continue as a vendor-agnostic software provider.

With the purchase, Bruker expands its data management capabilities, including software development capabilities and an ELN offering. Mestrelab works with major advanced NMR and benchtop NMR firms, and also provides GC/MS and LC/MS software solutions. This is Bruker’s first acquisition of a dedicated software company since SCiLS (see IBO 1/15/17). Mestrelab was founded in 2004.
