Caliper to Sell Sample Prep Product Lines to Biotage
The purchase was finalized on May 24. These are the third and fourth product lines Caliper has divested since late 2008, as the company seeks a more focused business and greater financial resources. In acquiring the product lines, Biotage diversifies its product offerings beyond its flagship microwave synthesis technology. By further expanding into sample preparation, the company seeks more end-market diversity and higher margin sales.
Stockholm, Sweden 5/17/10; Hopkinton, MA 5/17/10—Biotage has agreed to purchase Caliper Life Sciences’ RapidTrace and TurboVac product lines for $16.5 million in cash. In 2009, the product lines generated $9.5 million in sales. The RapidTrace SPE Workstation is a high-throughput solid phase extraction platform. The TurboVac Concentration Evaporator Workstations are microprocessor-controlled concentrators for automated sample evaporation Caliper will continue to manufacture the products under a three-year agreement. “The extensive installed base of these products outside the pharma segment delivers new customer relationships into our new target markets of Food, Agricultural, Clinical, Forensics and Environmental,” stated Biotage President and CEO Torben Jörgensen. Eight Caliper employees will be offered jobs with Biotage. The companies also plan to explore further strategic collaboration opportunities, such as a channel collaboration.
