This month, Canada released its Economic Action Plan 2015. Starting in 2017, the Canada Foundation for Innovation will receive CAD 1.33 billion ($1.09 billion) over six years for research infrastructure at hospitals and universities. Over six years, federal labs and research facilities will get CAD 380 million for repairs and upgrades. Beginning in 2016, the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council will receive CAD 15 million more each year—CAD 10 million for research collaborations between universities and companies in areas such as natural resources and energy, and environment and agriculture, and CAD 5 million for industry-driven research at colleges and polytechnic institutes. The Canadian Institutes of Health Research will receive a boost of CAD 13 million per year to improve the health care system in partnership with local governments and the academic, private and nonprofit sectors. Over two years, beginning in 2015, the National Research Council will get CAD 119.2 million to support its R&D partnerships with industry.
