The number of worldwide mergers and acquisitions (M&A) in the chemical industry grew 18.2% to 635 in 2014. The value of the transactions totaled $77.8 billion, an increase of 144.7%. Of the deals announced in 2014, 13 were greater than $1 billion in value, totaling $52 billion. At a value of $40.5 billion, up 181.3%, 26% of all 2014 transactions were cross border, up 5.0%. M&A numbered the highest in the commodities segment followed by intermediates and specialty materials, and fertilizers and agricultural chemicals at 383, 159 and 67, rising 12.6%, 20.5% and 55.8%, respectively. The countries with the highest M&A activity were the US, China and Germany, at 206, 70 and 44, up 28.8%, 45.8% and 18.9%, respectively. The UK, India, Japan and Brazil had the next-highest numbers of deals, at 35, 17, 15 and 12, up 29.6%, 15.0% and 7.1%, and down 20.0%, respectively. The 236 remaining transactions occurred in other countries.
