Chinese R&D spending grew 12.4% in 2014 to CNY 1,331.2 billion ($216 billion) or 2.09% of GDP. Five percent was for “fundamental research programs.” In 2013, R&D spending increased 15.0%. The number of authorized patents fell 0.8% in 2014 to 130,000. The number of product inspection labs totaled 27,051, of which 597 were national centers. Of 702 sections of 10 major river basins, 72% met national water quality standards from Grade I to Grade II for surface water, but 9% were below Grade V. Ambient Air Quality Standards were met by 10% of the 161 cities monitored.
