China
The World Bank has approved a $100 million loan to China, its largest food safety loan to date. The money will finance 70% of the government’s Jilin Agricultural Product Quality and Safety Project. Located in northeast China, Jilin province is a major supplier of agriculture to the country. The Project is designed to improve product quality and reduce safety risks. It includes the development of new standards for agricultural practices, as well as upgrades of quality testing, management, monitoring and enforcement. A pilot of a risk-based product safety–monitoring system will be established. Labs for pesticide and veterinary-residue testing will be upgraded and built. A public awareness campaign will be sponsored, and new grants and loans will be available.
