The clinical biomarker that has had the most impact in terms of volume and clinical significance over the last decade is cTn I/cTn T (cardiac troponin I/cardiac troponin T), according to 49% of the 600 respondents surveyed by Clinical Laboratory News. HbA1c (glycated hemaglobin) was selected by 24% of respondents as the most significant. Biomarkers for Alzheimer’s diseases and stroke were rated as having the most future potential significance. According to 33% of those surveyed, cost reductions were the most important management issue of the last decade for clinical diagnostic labs, while 29% chose recruiting and maintaining staff as the most important issue. As for the next decade, 39% of respondents cited the standardization of lab tests as the major lab medicine issue, 23% chose multimarker assays and 15% chose pharmocogenetics.
