In 2012, the EU’s food and drink industry’s revenues grew 3.1% to €1,048 billion ($1,344 billion). The five largest industry subsectors in order of revenues were meat products, “various food products,” drinks, dairy products, and bakery and farinaceous products. The largest EU food and drink producers by revenue were Germany, France, Italy, the UK and Spain. EU food exports rose 13.2% in 2012 to €86,227 million, and imports were flat at €63,230 million. Food exports grew the fastest to China (30%), Australia (18%), Saudi Arabia (16%) and Japan (15%). Exports grew the fastest for oil and fats (24%), spirits (20%), prepared animal feeds (18%), and bakery and farinaceous products (18%). Imports rose the fastest from Russia, Ukraine and Malaysia. The fastest-growing imports were processed tea and coffee (21%), mineral waters and soft drinks (15%), and oil and fats (12%). In total, the EU accounted for 16% of global food and drink exports in 2012, and 14% of global food and drink imports.
