Pharmaceutical R&D spending in Europe rose 5.0% to an estimated €26.0 billion ($35.6 billion) in 2007, according to the European Federation of Pharmaceutical Industries and Association’s (EFPIA) 2008 Edition of “Pharmaceutical Industry in Figures.” R&D as a percentage of sales for EFPIA members was 18.5%, similar to 2006’s figure of 18.6%. The EU pharmaceutical industry employed 107,000 people in R&D in 2007, which accounted for 17% of the pharmaceutical workforce in the region. The EU-27’s production of pharmaceuticals increased 4.2% last year to €190.0 billion. Exports increased 3.8% to €210.0 billion, while imports rose 1.9% to €161.0 billion. In total, the EU pharmaceutical was valued at €205.0 billion in 2007 at retail prices, a 5.4% increase. In addition, 10 of the 25 new chemical and biological entities launched last year originated in Europe. EFPIA members consist of 32 national pharmaceutical industry associations and 43 companies.
