On April 15, the European Parliament approved €22 billion ($30.4 billion) in funds for the “innovation investment package” of Horizon 2020. Programs include public-private partnerships for the Innovative Medicines Initiative (IMI 2), Fuel Cells and Hydrogen 2, Clean Sky 2 and Bio-Based Industries. Recipients of funding will be determined competitively. Public-public partnership areas include the European Metrology Research Programme 2 (EMRP 2) and the European and Developing Countries Clinical Trials Partnership 2 (EDCTP 2), which works to establish and improve research in developing countries, with the aim of developing new drugs to treat diseases in sub-Saharan Africa. Seven years of funding will be provided by the EU (€9 billion), industry (€9 billion) and member states (€4 billion). Total allocations for IMI 2, Fuel Cells and Hydrogen 2, Clean Sky 2 and Bio-Based Industries are €3.28 million, €1.33 million, €3.95 million and €3.71 million, respectively. EMRP 2 and EDCTP 2 will receive €1.34 million and €600 million, respectively.
