The European Commission has awarded €610 million ($858 million) in funding in response to the third call for the Seventh Framework Program for Research’s Heath Program. Of the 679 proposals submitted, 106 consortia projects were chosen. These projects were grouped into four categories: 10 projects for “biotechnology, generic tools and medical technologies for human health” received €142 million; 43 consortia for “translating research for human health” received €328 million; 22 projects for “optimizing the delivery of health care to European citizens” received €76 million; and 22 consortia received €76 million for “other actions.” Small- and medium-sized enterprises represented 15% of the selected projects and 14% of funding. In addition to the EU member states, 53 counties submitted proposals. The projects are expected to begin in the next few months. Among the projects are an effort to predict antibiotic resistance at the drug-target level and systems biology research of Mycobacterium tuberculosis.
