The US FDA released proposals earlier this month for two new food safety rules as part of the Food Safety Modernization Act. The first rule, “Current Good Manufacturing Practice and Hazard Analysis and Risk-Based Preventive Controls for Human Food,” would require firms handling food to have written plans identifying hazards and how to address them, as well as to record monitoring results and the actions taken to address problems. The second rule, “Standards for the Growing, Harvesting, Packing, and Holding of Produce for Human Consumption,” requires the FDA to formulate standards for fruit and vegetable production and harvesting for routes associated with microbial contamination, such as agricultural water and biological soil amendments of animal origin. Public comment on each rule will be accepted for 120 days. The compliance dates will be one year after the final version of the rule is published.
