Germany

The recipients of the second round of funding of Germany’s Excellence Initiative were announced earlier this month. The biggest winners were the so-called “elite universities,” which will each receive €10–€15 million ($13–$19 million) per year for five years. The first round designated nine universities as “elite.” The second round specified the choice of 12 universities as “elite,” including five new universities, which were: the University of Dresden, Humboldt University of Berlin, the University of Bremen, the University of Cologne and the University of Tübingen. Universities losing their “elite” designation were the University of Karlsruhe, the University of Göttingen and the University of Freiburg. In total, second-round funding for the Excellence Initiatives, which funds “elite” universities as well as clusters of excellences and graduate schools, totaled €2.7 billion, up from €1.9 billion in the first round.
