On June 24, the Obama Administration announced new objectives for the Materials Genome Initiative (MGI), which was launched in 2011 to reduce the development time of materials for advanced manufacturing and to promote materials research collaborations. As part of the new objectives, the NIST will invest $25 million over five years in a new Center of Excellence on Advanced Materials. The Georgia Institute of Technology and the University of Wisconsin, Madison, will invest a respective $10 million and $5 million to establish new materials innovation centers. The University of Michigan will increase its funding of MGI programs by $20 million. Seven additional academic institutes and one software firm will implement new MGI initiatives, including new facilities, graduate degrees and research prospects. In fiscal 2012, MGI agencies invested almost $63 million in 70 awards for MGI-related research.
