Following the 16-day closure of the US federal government, science agencies are catching up on grant reviews. At the NIH, 200 review panels were canceled, affecting the ranking of 11,000 grant applications. In response to researchers’ pleas, the agency will reschedule the panel meetings for the next two months. The NSF was forced to cancel 98 review panels. As a result, application deadlines are being extended in many cases. Early career awardees in particular are expected to be adversely affected.
