An agreement, or “continuing resolution,” for the fiscal 2011 budget was reached by President Obama and leaders of the Democratic Senate and Republican House of Representatives. The budget cuts funding for science agencies across the board, but much less so than the initial budget approved by the House of Representatives in February would have. Science and technology at the EPA received the largest cuts, a decrease of 3.9% from last year’s budget to $815 million. At the Department of Energy, the Office of Science’s budget was reduced 0.6% from fiscal 2010 levels to $4.9 billion, including $180 million for its new Research Projects Agency-Energy. The NIH’s budget was cut by 0.8% to $30.7 billion. The National Science Foundation will receive $6.81 billion, a 1% decrease from fiscal 2010. (President Obama signed the final budget on April 15.)
