This year, the EPA will begin to implement the Endocrine Disruptor Screening Program (EDSP), which was established in 1998. Initially, 67 pesticide active ingredients and high-production volume chemicals used as pesticide inert ingredients will be screened. Tier 1 of the EDSP will screen the substances for interactions with estrogen, androgen or thyroid hormone systems. Substances that are found to have a potential impact will undergo Tier 2 testing to establish if there are adverse effects and to determine the quantitative dose-response relationships. Chemical manufacturers are responsible for testing costs. Existing data may be submitted to satisfy testing orders, but will be evaluated on a case by case basis to determine if they satisfy the requirements.
