Hitachi Partners to Develop Nanopore Sequencer
According to Base4, its technology is based on semiconductor manufacturing materials, allowing manufacturing of its system using wafer-scale production techniques. The system will be able to directly read DNA modifications, such as methylation. Hitachi manufactures Life Technologies’ CE-based sequencers.
Tokyo, Japan 7/8/13; Cambridge, UK 7/8/13—Hitachi High-Technologies and Base4 Innovation have announced a collaborative technology development agreement to develop a long read length, single molecule, nanopore-based DNA sequencer. Base4’s nanopore sequencing method increases the signal of unlabeled DNA passing through a nanopore by using laser light-enhanced gold structures. “For this nanopore sequencing system, Hitachi High-Tech is our preferred manufacturing partner,” commented Base4 Founder and CEO Cameron Frayling. “Development of this technology is expected to take place over three years, both in Cambridge and Hitachinaka-shi, Japan.”
