IBO Indexes Mostly Lower in June

Apprehensions over the strength of the US economy and the sovereign debt crisis in Greece sent equity markets tumbling in early June. For the first half of the month, ending June 15, the Dow Jones Industrial Average slumped 5.4%. However, equity prices regained some ground as investors focused on the new austerity measures in Greece and marginally optimistic economic data. The final estimate for first-quarter US GDP growth was increased to 1.9% from the prior estimate of 1.8%. Manufacturing data strengthened but was mostly attributed to a buildup in inventory. The Dow, S&P and NASDAQ ended the month down 1.2%, 1.8% and 2.2%, respectively. For the first half of the year, the Dow, S&P 500 and NASDAQ are up 7.2%, 5.0% and 4.5%, respectively.

In alignment with the general market trend, three of the four IBO Stock Indexes traded lower in June. The Process/Metrology/Motion Instrumentation, Laboratory Instrumentation and Diversified Instrumentation Stock Indexes declined 4.9%, 1.2% and 0.6%, respectively. The Lab Consumables/Equipment Stock Index grew 1.5%.
