According to a report entitled “International Comparative Performance of India’s Research Base (2009–2014)” released in February 2016, India’s research publication output has increased greatly since 2009, growing from 3.1% to 4.4% of the world’s total science research publication output in 2013, which equals a CAGR of 13.9%. In 2013, India released 106,065 papers, a 68.5% increase from the 62,955 papers released in 2009. Research publications from India have also been amongst the world’s top-cited papers, with the number of Indian citations growing between 0.8 and 1.2 percentage points from 2009 to 2013, indicating that not only is India’s output increasing, but the quality of the country’s research is in the “highest excellence percentile.” Out of the world’s total research paper collaborations, India’s contribution has grown from 1.7% in 2009 to 2.2% in 2013, for a CAGR of 7.0%. In 2013, 16.0% of India’s research paper output was part of international collaborations, and Indian papers were cited 39% more than the world average for collaborative papers. In 2013, India’s scholarly paper output exceeded that of Canada and Italy.
