A new Indian research funding body is set to begin operating this month. The National Science and Engineering Research Board will allocate funding for basic science research. The Board will assume the duty of funding external projects from the Department of Science and Technology’s (DST) Science and Engineering Research Council. As an entity separate from the DST, the Board is expected to provide a more flexible, independent mechanism for funding research. Initial funding has been set at INR 1000 crore ($225 million). The Board’s members will include scientists from the Ministry of Science and Technology.
