Biotechnology
Since last September, the biotechnology industry’s funding has had outflows each month, which totaled $3 billion in January and February of this year. Funds raised by biotechnology companies have decreased 68.4% from 2015, falling from $58 billion to $18.3 billion. The Nasdaq Biotech Index of US health care firms has fallen 17.6% since the beginning of 2016. In total, the biotech sector has raised $1.4 billion through IPOs to date, as opposed to the $5 billion raised in the first half of 2015. A major contributing factor to the decreases in investments is the upcoming US elections, which could greatly alter the health care sector and the drug pricing policies in the US.
