Lab Equipment: New Categories Added to Market
IBO has made some major modifications to the forecast issue’s laboratory equipment market. IBO has expanded the number of categories in the market from eight to 13. The added segments are: gas generators, laboratory washers, shakers and stirrers, laboratory water purification, and concentrators and evaporators. The total market demand for laboratory equipment is forecast to reach $3.9 billion in 2013, representing growth of 3.6% for the year.
As a broad-based vendor, Thermo Fisher Scientific dominates many of the lab equipment segments, including centrifuges, incubators, fume hoods, and shakers and stirrers. Thermo’s laboratory equipment acquisitions over the years have enabled the company to prevail as the leader in lab equipment, with a one-fifth market share in 2012.
The 2013 growth rate for the largest lab equipment market, lab centrifuges, is more than one percentage point slower than the overall market, thus the centrifuge market is expected to gain only about $20 million in revenues this year. Laboratory water purification is the second-largest lab equipment segment. Its 2013 growth rate is in line with the overall market.
The transfection market, which includes electroporation, lipofection and viral vectors, is predominantly aftermarket based. Only a very small section of the electroporation market is composed of initial systems and service. With a 2013 sales growth rate of more than twice the overall lab equipment market average, the transfection market will add nearly $40 million in sales by the end of 2013. Furthermore, this growth is expected to continue through 2014.
Extraction is the only other lab equipment technology segment with a 2012 double-digit market share. Its 2013 growth rate is about 1% lower than the overall lab equipment market. As a result, the extraction market is only expected to grow by $10 million this year.
Gas generators, concentrators and evaporators, incubators, and fume hoods are the next-largest segments of the lab equipment market. Of these four techniques, gas generator sales are expected to grow the fastest in 2013. Incubator sales are expected to post the lowest growth rate for the period.
Biological safety cabinets, microwave-assisted chemistry, lab washers, fermentors and bioreactors, and shakers and stirrers are the remaining five technology segments in the lab equipment market. Lab washers, and shakers and stirrers are the two smallest lab equipment segments. Microwave-assisted chemistry and lab washers are expected to post above average growth rates, while fermentors and bioreactors, biological safety cabinets, and shakers and stirrers will have lower-than-average growth rates. Thermo leads both the biological safety cabinet, and shaker and stirrer segments. CEM, Sartorius and Miele lead the microwave, fermentor and bioreactor, and lab washer segments, respectively.
