Leica Buys OCT Maker

A noninvasive imaging technology used to capture volumetric images of the eye, OCT can monitor morpho-logical changes of ocular tissue. For the preclinical research market, Bioptigen offers the Envisu R-Class systems for use with animal models.

Wetzlar, Germany and Morrisville, NC 6/1/15—Leica Microsystems has agreed to acquire Bioptigen for an undisclosed amount. Bioptigen develops and manufactures optical coherence tomography (OCT) systems and software for opthalmological and translational research applications. Leica will integrate OCT into its surgical microscopes. Bioptigen products include the FDA-cleared Envisu C2300 OCT system. “Adding Bioptigen’s OCT capabilities to our surgical microscopes directly addresses our customers’ requirement for better decision making tools,” said Heinrich Dreyer, vice president of Leica Microsystems’ Medical Division.
