Stratos Genomics announced in June that it received $2.1 million in funding to develop its low-cost Sequencing by Expansion method for whole-genome analysis and molecular diagnostics.

In July, Quanterix entered into a collaboration with Sony DADC Austria for the development and manufacture of smart consumables for use in life science and in vitro diagnostic (IVD) markets. Quanterix plans to launch an automated instrument for the technology and the consumables in 2013 and an IVD platform in 2014.

In July, Cell Biosciences changed its name to ProteinSimple. The company expects to record more than $40 million in revenues in 2011.

In August, PathoGenetiX received $4.0 million in the first closing of a Series B financing, led by Excel Venture Management. The firm received $9.5 million in commitments. The company is developing Genome Sequence Scanning technology for use in identifying pathogens.

Knome announced in an August SEC filing that it raised $5 million as part of a $20 million funding round.

In August, Digilab announced it will market Axela’s technologies in the US.

Illumina is collaborating with the University of Oxford to sequence (using the HiSeq 2000) the whole genomes of 500 individuals affected with life-threatening diseases that pose challenges in diagnostics, treatment and care.

LI-COR appointed Fusion Scientific Technologies as its Indian distributor, effective July 1, replacing Ashco Niulab.

Product Introductions

In July, GnuBIO shipped an early-access sequencing system to the Université de Montréal Pharmocogenomics Center at the Montreal Heart Institute, where it will be used to sequence a blinded cohort of clinical cardiomyopathy samples.

In July, Caliper Life Sciences’ LabChip Dx instrument achieved CE IVD registration in Europe. The system was developed in collaboration with Seegene.

Bio-Rad Laboratories released the ProteOn HTG Sensor Chip, using Tris-NTA complex, for the study of polyhystidine-tagged protein interactions. The Chips can be regenerated and reused.

YSI Life Science introduced the 2900 Biochemistry Analyzer, featuring a 96-position well-plate capability and the ability to simultaneously measure two compatible chemistries.

Sales/Orders of Note

Cancer Research UK selected Illumina as a preferred service provider. Illumina will provide a range of services, including whole-human genome sequencing and expression and epigenetic services for the characterization of transcriptomic and epigenomic changes in tumors.
